How It Began
How Was Ba Futuru Founded?
Ba Futuru was established in 2004 by Leilani Elliott (formerly Danielle Ujvari) and Sierra James, with support from Joana dos Santos Camoes. The organization was created in response to violence affecting children in Timor-Leste.
Driven by a vision of peace and empowerment, the founders committed themselves to breaking the cycle of violence and building a brighter future for children and young people throughout the country.

What Are Ba Futuru's Key Milestones?

Founded
Ba Futuru established focusing on protecting children, reducing violence and inspiring young learners. Early initiatives targeted conflict resolution among conflict-affected children in orphanages, schools, and IDP camps.
Crisis Response & Youth Engagement
Following the 2006 crisis, Ba Futuru pivoted toward transforming the lives of at-risk youth through engagement programs combining conflict prevention, art, and sports.
Women's Empowerment Launched
Women's empowerment initiatives launched, recognizing barriers to female participation in development and peace-building. Implemented grassroots protection networks and leadership development.
Early Childhood Development
Early Childhood Development Initiative began, addressing the reality that fewer than 10% of Timorese children receive early childhood education.
20th Anniversary
Ba Futuru celebrated its 20th anniversary on September 20th with nearly 200 guests including government leaders, embassies, donors, partners, alumni, and community members, reflecting on two decades of impact in Timor-Leste.

Where Is Ba Futuru Today?
Today, Ba Futuru operates across all 13 municipalities of Timor-Leste with 30+ staff and volunteers, having directly engaged over 40,000 individuals and impacted thousands more.
